First Aid Requirements for High Hazard Work

The Construction Industry is considered to be High Hazard Work.

Reference: Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code

Part 11 First Aid

First Aid Training

The type and number of workers requiring first aid training will depend on the type of work, number of workers on site and distance from the nearest health care facility (hospital or emergency care facility).

An Employer must have a first aid trained worker on a construction work site when they have 2 or more workers on site.

The following is the requirement for a “close work site” which is less than 20 minutes to the nearest “health care facility” that can provide emergency medical treatment:

2-4 workers: 1 Basic (Emergency) First Aid trained person

5-9 workers: 1 Intermediate (Standard) First Aid and 1 Basic (Emergency) First Aid trained person
